My City – Hints & Tips – Chapter 8

This is one in a series of posts regarding the legacy game, My City. You can access all my posts on that game HERE.

The eighth envelope contains the elements for My City, Chapter 8: Prosperity, Episodes 22, 23 & 24. Opening up the envelope will give you access to everything you need for the final 3 games. But I will reveal the information needed for each of those episodes one at a time, under the individual spoiler tags below.

Chapter 8 – Prosperity

My City Chapter 8 Envelope

Episode 22
Over many generations, you have been actively building your city. Finally, your labors bear fruit as a period of prosperity is ushered in. Your city’s inhabitants place special value on a healthy environment and attractive living areas.

Prep for Chapter 8

Remove all the blue buildings from the game, unless they have the blue cog/factory icon/sticker on them. The old blue buildings have fallen victim to modernisation, and you will not use them any longer. A lot of customisation has happened during the game, so most blue buildings might have been turned into factories by someone, especially in a 4 player game, so keep all the cards in the deck. When you reveal a blue building that a player doesn’t have, they pass their turn, but they do not lose a point.

  • As there are now fewer blue buildings in the game, it will probably be best to use yellow or red buildings to connect your port to the railroad tracks.
Stickers

There are 4 sheets of stickers in the envelope. The vast majority of them are tracks, trees and blank spaces. But there are also 8 new single square building stickers. This is …

The Palace

Each player places a palace sticker on E6, 3 spaces below your port. It counts as a red building, and you cannot build over it. From now on, each player places their first building next to the palace.

The Park Rules

If, after placing a building, you surround a single light green space, or a single space with rocks, on all four sides, with red buildings, you create a park in that space. Announce this out loud, and immediately affix a tree sticker, showing 1 tree, on this park space. It does not matter if the same building borders more than one side of the park.

My City Chapter 8 - The Park Rule

You also create a park if you surround a single space with rocks on three sides with red buildings, and the fourth side edge is next to a forest space or the edge of a playing field. In this case, you do not get an extra tree, but you do cover the rocks with a light green sticker.

My City Chapter 8 Park Rule

  • Bonuses are awarded at the end of the campaign to the players with the most trees and the fewest rocks. The park rules are a way to help with both of these conditions.
The Palace Expansion

At the end of episodes 22 & 23, the players who do not colour in a progress circle, get an extra palace sticker, to expand their palace. You place it in any space adjacent to the palace stickers that are already on the board. It increases the size of the red building, and you can use it to connect the port to the railroad, and make parks.

End of Campaign Bonuses

There are progress symbols to be awarded at the end of the campaign, to the players with the most gold, the most trees, and the fewest rocks. A first and second place is awarded, in games with more than 2 players, with ties being awarded in the same way as the end of an episode.

My City End of Campaign Bonuses

A final recap of the rules.

Rules
  • Your first building must be built next to the palace.
  • You may NOT build over forests.
  • Churches must be built. Players cannot pass when you draw a Church.
  • You cannot pass if your score is on 0. You must earn points via the “Railroad Rule” before you can pass.
  • Negative points are not capped when you reach 0, when scoring. If you are losing points for rocks and you drop below 0, you must keep track of the negative number, to take it off any future points you earn.
Scoring

Scoring is the same as episode 21.

My City Episode 22 Rules

The player with the most points colours in 2 circles. In a game with 3 or more players, the player with the second most points colours in 1 circle. The players that don’t colour in a circle attach another palace sticker, adjacent to the palace sticker on their board.

Episode 23
The Better Living Rule

From now on, the better living rule applies. If you build a yellow/residential building adjacent to at least 1 tree, you announce this out loud, and immediately get 1 point.

Scoring

Apart from the addition to better living rule, the scoring and rewards are identical to Episode 22.

My City Episode 23 Rules

Episode 24
All the rules from episode 23 apply.  However, in episode 24, you can not build over trees.

Scoring

The scoring is identical to Episode 23.

Then you award the final bonuses for gold, trees and rocks.

Overall Winner of My City

Now check to see who has coloured in the most progress circles. They are the winner of My City. A tie for progress circles is broken by the player with the most gold nuggets. A further tie is broken by the player with the most train tracks.

Congratulations to the winner.

My City – The Eternal Game

That is the end of the My City campaign. But you can play a stand alone game using the other side of the board. The rules are more or less the same as Episode 10. For safety, I’ll put the details under a Spoiler Tag.

The Eternal Game
The first thing to do is separate the unused components from the campaign, and pack them away.

  • You will not use the investor token.
Buildings and Cards

Each player has a set of 8 buildings in 3 colours + 3 churches, with their icon on the back of them. Pack away any extra buildings or churches, as you will not use them.

My City: Eternal Game - Tiles

My City: Eternal Game - Churches

The construction deck includes a card for each of the 27 buildings, plus the blocking card. Pack away the remaining cards in the game as you will not use them. And then shuffle the 28 card deck.

Game Board

Each player gets a game board, and turns it over to the Eternal Game side.

My City Eternal Game board

Each player gets a token, and places it on the number 10 space. Place their building tokens around the edge of each players board.

Buildings can cover 88 squares, and there are 87 light green spaces + spaces with rocks. However, the blocking card means that you usually skip a building (not if the blocking card is the last card in the deck) and there will be empty light green spaces.

Building Placement

Reveal the top card of the deck, and each player places the corresponding building on their board. You must place the first building adjacent to the river, but not in such a way that it is in squares that are on both sides of the river. You place each successive building adjacent to a previously placed building. They cannot be placed on top of another building. You cannot place them on both sides of the river.

  • Once a building has been placed, it cannot be moved.

Try to construct as many contiguous buildings of the same colour as possible. You receive points for the largest contiguous group of each colour.

My City: Eternal Game - Contiguous Buildings

If at any time a player does not wish to place a building, them may pass. They turn the building face down, and lose a point from their running total, which started at 10. A player can choose to end their game after a card is revealed, instead of placing the building. In this instance, they do not lose a point for ending their game.

  • Churches must be placed

You can not pass when you play a church card from the deck. If you cannot, or choose to not, play a church, you end your participation in the game. You do not lose a point.

Churches are worth 3 points if they have a building of all 3 colours adjacent to them. Some churches might have a “5” sticker on them, due to the campaign game. Ignore this, as all churches give a maximum bonus of 3 points.

My City: Eternal Game - Churches

Wells

You can build over Wells, like rocks or trees. However, at the end of the episode, a player will get 4 extra points, if they manage to place 4 different buildings adjacent to the well, one on each side.

My City: Eternal Game - Wells

End of the Episode

The game continues until all players end their participation in the game, or they play the last card, and they place the last building. Then each player calculates their points.

Scoring
  • Immediately -1 when a player passes.
  • Immediately +3 for first player(s) to cover both gold veins.
  • End of Game +2 for each space with 2 trees.
  • End of Game -2 for space with 2 rocks.
  • End of Game +? number of buildings in largest group of each colour.
  • End of Game +3 for each Church with all 3 coloured buildings next to it.
  • End of Game +4 if 4 different buildings are adjacent to Well.
  • End of Game – 1 for each empty green space.

The player with the most points is the winner. If two or more players have attained the same point total, then the player with the fewest empty light green spaces in the top row of their game board is the winner. If the result in the first row is equal, then the second row decides the winner, etc.

It is possible to play a perfect game.

  • Never pass (Remain at 10).
  • Be the first to cover both gold veins (+3).
  • 3 different coloured buildings next to all 3 churches (+9).
  • 4 different buildings adjacent to the Well (+4).
  • Skip building card on the bottom of the deck, so you skip no buildings.
  • All 8 buildings of each colour in a contiguous group (+24).
  • Only 1 light green space not covered (-1).
  • All Rocks covered (-0).
  • All Trees uncovered (+10).

Top Score of 59.

Good luck.
