Aeon’s End: The New Age – Folded Space Insert

This is one in a series of posts regarding the board game Aeon’s End: The New Age. You can access all my other “AE: The New Age” posts HERE.

I bought my first Folded Space for Terraforming Mars, and I have been a big fan ever since. Inserts are obviously great organisational tools, and the Folded Space inserts are made of foam core, so add minimal weight to the box. However, they are a relatively new company, and it takes time to design. In order to fulfill what people want, they ask for requests, to find out what’s popular. In the mean time, you just need to wait, or see if you can get something that might work for your game of choice.

They have two different Collectable Card Game inserts, which weren’t quite the right size for the Aeon’s End box. I have been tempted in the past to get one anyway, to see if I can make it work, but they have now released their insert for Aeon’s End.

Aeon's End: The New Age - Folded Space Insert Package

It will work for all big boxes except for Legacy, which comes in a different shaped box. It comes with 4 sheets of pre scored foam core, and the directions for constructing the various pieces, and putting them together in the game box.

Assembly

All that’s required to build the insert is some PVA glue. Punch out the various pieces according to the instruction sheet, and assemble each component dry to make sure it all fits together okay. All the edges have a jigsaw kind of feel, so they hold their shape pretty well, even without the glue. Then pull it apart, dab some glue on each edge that touches another piece, and put it back together.

The components are 4 card wells and 4 trays to hold the various tokens. Let the glue dry before putting it into use. PVA glue shouldn’t give off an chemicals to affect the cards, but it doesn’t hurt to make sure the glue is really dry, and any gases have gone.

Inside the Box

Remove everything from the game box, keeping the tokens and cards organised. The Insert goes together like so:

Once you have it in place, you should find it easy enough to remove the trays with the components. The card wells have no base in them, and are not meant to be removed once they are in place. Put the tokens in the trays, using 2 for player tokens, and 2 for nemesis tokens, and arrange the cards according to your taste. Shown below, and starting from the 6 position, and moving clockwise, I have Treasure Cards, Basic and specific Nemesis cards, Gems, Relics & Spells, Unique Starters, Crystals and Sparks and Randomisers.

It comfortably holds all the cards from The New Age, Into the Wild, Shattered Dreams and The Ancients. The last card well is laying down, and can hold other cards or Breach tokens, if you prefer. On top of that well, place all the player and nemesis mats, the breaches and the health counters. The rules sit comfortably on top, and the lid seals firmly shut.

I am very happy with the insert, and will be buying another one for my copy of War Eternal. No doubt I’ll automatically add one to future Aeon’s End big box purchases from here on.
